Jaya Griscom

Jaya Griscom was born in 1990 in Menlo Park, California. From an early age she exhibited a strong sense of aesthetics and a passionate urge to create. Throughout elementary and middle school, Jaya supplemented formal instruction in weaving, ceramics, and woodworking with her own practice of drawing, painting, and crafting. In search of an artistically driven program, Jaya shipped herself off to Idyllwild Arts Academy in Idyllwild, California. There she expanded her creative vocabulary to include printmaking, photography, and conceptual sculpture. In 2008 she graduated with a high school diploma, a pre-professional certificate in Visual Arts, and the award given to the best artist, scholar, and citizen. After a year off to teach art, she moved to Annandale on Hudson, New York to study at Bard College. As a double major in Studio Art and Religious Studies with a concentration in Gender and Sexuality Studies, Jaya diversified her undergraduate education further as a supervisor for Bard’s Emergency Medical Service and a travel grant recipient for independent thesis research in India. Upon graduation in 2013, she moved back to the Bay Area. Jaya now designs, prints, dyes, and sews predominantly textile-based mixed media work and handmade clothing out of her studio in Alviso, California.
